La Malbaie was one of the first vacation resorts in Canada, attracting wealthy tourists including William-Howard Taft, former President of the United States. Located at the end of Highway 362, also known as the River Route, La Malbaie continues to welcome tourists to the Charlevoix region. Visitors can stroll the Chemin des Falaises to view the stately villas that continue to stand and others that have been converted into inns. The town has merged with the former municipalities of Pointe-au-Pic, Riviere-Malbaie, Saint-Fidele, Cap-a-l'Aigle and Sainte-Agnes creating a large territory with a population of over 9000 people. Guests can try their luck at the Charlevoix Casino located in the Pointe-au-Pic sector near the prestigious hotel Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu. Try a round of golf at the Richelieu or at the historic Murray Bay Golf Course, celebrating over 125 years. Nearby parks and rivers offer hiking, kayaking, cycling and fishing opportunities. For winter enthusiasts, travel northeast of Riviere-Malbaie to Mont-Grand Fonds, offering skiing and other snow adventures. Art and culture are also prominent in La Malbaie with historic churches and the Musee de Charlevoix showcasing a permanent exhibition called 'Belonging' tracing the heritage of Charlevoix.
